Magnetic measurements have gained an increasing share of the methodologies available to the environmental scientist over the past thirty years. The abundance and wide distribution of magnetic minerals, principally iron, in rocks and grains coupled to improved instrumentation allow the dynamics of erosion, transport, sedimentation and soil forming processes to be studied.
The magnetic susceptibility meter MS2 with its wide range of sensors is specifically designed for this application. Sensors cover a range of sample sizes from below 1cc for laboratory use to a 180mm diameter loop type sensor for surface measurements in the field.
The MS3 magnetic suscpetibility meter offer a wider range of measurement. It is compatible with most of the MS2 range of sensors. The unit is controlled from a PC or laptop, providing logging of data, and increasing the ease of use of the instrument. A field version of the system, compatible with ruggedised PDA will be soon available.
